Cole Pearn on probation for Daytona roof flap issue

By AMANDA VINCENT

Cole Pearn, crew chief for Martin Truex Jr. on the No. 78 Furniture Row Racing Toyota team in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, has been placed on NASCAR probation through the end of the year, according to a penalty announcement Wednesday from NASCAR.

The penalty is listed as a P2 penalty and comes as a result of an issue with the No. 78 car’s roof flaps that was discovered during Daytona 500 front-row qualifying at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway on Feb. 15. As a result of the issue, Truex failed to make a qualifying attempt and started his Can-Am Duel race on Feb. 18 from the back.

NASCAR also issued several written warnings after Daytona Speedweeks. Warnings were issued to the No. 7 Tommy Baldwin Racing Chevrolet team of Regan Smith, the No. 38 Front Row Motorsports Ford team of Landon Cassill, the No. 44 Richard Petty Motorsports Ford team of Brian Scott and the No. 46 HScott Motorsports Chevrolet team of Michael Annett. All four of those warnings came as a result of teams failing to get through the laser inspection station twice during pre-qualifying inspection.
