Dale Jr. goes from sandwich tweet to good cause

By AMANDA VINCENT

After a Dale Earnhardt Jr. tweet that was, seemingly, heard around the world in which NASCAR’s most popular driver shared his favorite sandwich of bananas and mayonnaise, the driver was inspired to use that attention to raise funds for charity.

“I was shocked, in a completely, good way, at how much attention this picture received Tuesday night,” Earnhardt said. “I got a kick out of watching the videos of people trying the sandwich for the first time. even if they didn’t like it, I appreciated that they gave it a shot.”

Earnhardt has launched the website DaleJrSanwich.com where fans may make donations to Blessings in a Backpack, a non-profit organization aimed at providing food for at-risk children on weekends when they don’t have the benefit of meals at school.

Donations may be made at the site until April 23, and Earnhardt has pledged to match the total raised, up to $50,000.

“Blessings in a Backpack is an organization The Dale Jr. Foundation has a great partnership with,” Earnhardt said. “Just a few months ago, we went to a local school in Kannapolis (N.C.) to hand out backpacks of food for kids, so I’ve seen, firsthand, the impact. I hope we can take the fun conversations we’ve had about the sandwich and turn it into an impactful fundraiser to help feed kids.”

Earnhardt, though, doesn’t expect his favorite sandwich to be sent home with the children receiving the backpacks.

“No, I don’t expect the Blessings in a Backpack folks to pack banana and mayonnaise sanwiches in those bags, unless of course, they want to,” Earnhardt said.
