Darlington Raceway wins Myers Brothers Award

During the National Motorsports Press Association Myers Brothers Award Luncheon at Encore Las Vegas on Thursday, Darlington (S.C.) Raceway was named the recipient of the Myers Brothers Award for its throwback-themed Southern 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race weekend that celebrated the Southern 500s return to Labor Day weekend.

The “throwback” race, ran on Sept. 6, featured cars carrying retro paint schemes, driven by drivers wearing retro firesuits. The 2015 Southern 500 was the first Southern 500 held on Labor Day weekend since 2003.

The Myers Brothers Award, named for former NASCAR competitors Billy and Bobby Myers, is given out yearly to recognize those who have made significant contributions to stock car racing.

Several other awards, including those awarded by contingency sponsors, also were handed out during Thursday’s luncheon. They included:

Chevrolet Lifetime Achievement Award — Jeff Gordon
3M Lap Leader Award — Kevin Harvick
American Ethanol Green Flag Restart Award — Kevin Harvick
Coors Light Pole Award — Joey Logano
Duralast Brakes “Brake in the Race” Award — Kevin Harvick
Freescale “Wide Open” Award — Kevin Harvick
Goodyear Tires Award — Kyle Busch
Ingersoll Rand Power Move Award — No. 41 Stewart-Haas Racing team
MAHLE Clevite Engine Builder of the Year Award — Sam Vernatter, Hendrick Engines No. 4 team
Mechanix Wear Most Valuable Pit Crew Award — Stewart-Haas Racing No. 41 team
Mobil 1 Driver of the Year Award — Kyle Busch
MOOG Steering & Suspension Problem Solver of the Year Award — Greg Ives, crew chief on the No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports team
Sherwin-Williams Fastest Lap Award — Matt Kenseth
Sunoco Diamond Performance Award — Kyle Busch
