David Gilliland returns to Front Row Motorsports for Talladega

David Gilliland is expected to return to NASCAR Sprint Cup Series racing when the circuit heads to Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway for a May 1 race. He’ll be driving a third entry for Front Row Motorsports through a one-race deal with the team.

“They’ve worked hard and put a lot of effort into that car for that race,” Gilliland said. “I’m excited about it. It’s an off-weekend for Todd (Gilliland, son).”

Being out of a Sprint Cup car, Gilliland has been focused on his son, Todd Gilliland’s budding racing career. The younger Gilliland races in NASCAR’s K&N Pro Series.

The elder Gilliland attempt to qualify the No. 35 Ford of Front Row Motorsports for the season-opening Daytona 500 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in February but failed to make the race. He’s been out of a Cup car since.

Gilliland had 330 Sprint Cup Series starts to his credit. He finished second twice, once at Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway in 2008 and at Talladega in 2013. The Talladega runner-up showing came in a Front Row Motorsports entry when he finished second to then-Front Row Motorsports teammate, David Ragan.

In all Gilliland has four top-five and eight top-10 finishes in the Sprint Cup Series. He raced full-time for FRM from 2010 through the 2015 Sprint Cup season.
