Roush Fenway Racing ’s Carl Edwards has bulldogged his way toward the points lead the last two races, a thought that seemed impossible a month ago.
An eighth-place finish at Michigan, followed by a third at Sonoma has launched Edwards to within striking distance of Jimmie Johnson – who has held the points lead after all but two races, and after each of the last 11.
Following Johnson’s win at Pocono, the five-time champion’s points lead ballooned to a season-high 51 points. But a pair of subpar performances at Michigan and Sonoma helped Edwards cut that lead in half. It now stands at 25 points.
Then there’s the case of Greg Biffle, who’s enjoying a three-consecutive-race top-10 streak. That streak includes a win at Michigan, a runner-up finish a Pocono and an eighth at Sonoma last Sunday, all of which has planted him firmly in the top 10. During the streak, he has vaulted from 13th in the points standings to his current sixth-place spot.
Now comes the hard part.
Though the sample size is small, Roush Fenway has struggled somewhat at Kentucky Speedway. Biffle has twice finished 21st at Kentucky, and though Edwards finished fifth in the inaugural Kentucky NSCS race, he finished 20th last season.
