IndyCar: Simon Pagenaud wins race, championship in Sonoma

SONOMA, Calif. — Simon Pagenaud had the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series firmly in his grasp heading into the season finale, the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma. The Team Penske driver put a stranglehold on it in today’s 85-lap race, dominating from start to finish to win the race and his first championship.

Pagenaud piloted the No. 22 Hewlett Packard Enterprise Chevrolet across the finish line 3.2523 seconds ahead of Graham Rahal. It was the fifth win of the season for Pagenaud and coupled with mechanical problems for championship runner-up Will Power, finished with a 137-point cuhsion for the title.
