Michael McDowell gets new crew chief

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team Leavine Family Racing has named Kevin Walter as the interim crew chief for its No. 95 team and driver Michael McDowell. Walter previously was engineer on the No. 95 team.

“Kevin Walter will be the interim crew chief for the No. 95 team while we actively seek a replacement,” car owner Bob Leavine said. “We’re thankful to have additional engineering support from Team Penske during this time as we make changes to improve overall performance and prepare for the 2016 season.”

Leavine Family Racing announced prior to the Sept. 6 Southern 500 at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway that it had parted ways with crew chief Wally Rogers. The team did not enter the Darlington race.

“We appreciate everything Wally had done for this organization,” Leavine said. “I’m committed to growing this race team and improving our on-track performance. Looking ahead to 2016, we are putting the pieces in place to improve the overall performance of this race team.”

McDowell is in his second year of running a partial schedule with Leavine Family Racing. The pairing of McDowell and Walter will make its competitive debut Saturday night in the Federated Auto Parts 400 at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway. The race is scheduled to take the green flag shortly after 7:30 p.m. ET Saturday. The race may be seen on the NBC Sports Network.

McDowell has driven the No. 95 in 11 of the 24 Sprint Cup races, so far, this season, all with Rogers as his crew chief. So far, the team has one top-20 in 2015, a 20th-place finish at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International.
