As companies distanced themselves from the National Rifle Association (NRA) in the wake of multiple mass shootings, Bristol (Ten.) Motor Speedway announced that the NRA would continue to be a sponsor of the fall Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series night race at the track. The 2018 Bass Pro Shops NRA Night race is scheduled for Aug. 18.

“This has been a good long-standing partnership and we plan to continue,” read a statement from Bristol Motor Speedway.

The NRA has co-sponsored the night race at Bristol since 2016.

NASCAAR team owner Richard Childress is the NRA’s First Vice President.

“Racing fans and NRA members treasure their freedom and outdoor heritage, and the night race is where we go to celebrate that love of freedom, love of the shooting sports, and love of the great outdoors,” Childress said, as quoted in a press release in 2015, announcing the NRA’s co-sponsorship of the race, beginning the following season.
