Charlotte Motor Speedway unveiled its modified roval (infield road course) Thursday on which it will host the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series for a playoff race in September 2018. The 2.4-mile course will feature 18 turns and will host the first-ever NASCAR playoff race on a road course.

Two chicanes were added to the existing infield road course. Turns 12 and 13 of the course will be in the first of the two chicanes in the backstretch area. The second chicane, off what is turn four of the oval will provide turn 18 on the road course.

Also synthetic turf was added near the fronstretch chicane as a safety feature, designed to slow down cars that get off-track.

“As the roval, itself, is an innovation, we believe this revolutionary new use of synthetic turf was the perfect fit for our world-class racing venue,” Speedway Motorsports Inc. (parent company of Charlotte Motor Speedway) President and CEO Marcus Smith said. “The turf is more manageable than grass, resistant to heat and it provides a smooth, speed-scrubbing surface should a car spin through it.”
