In his last season of full-time competition as a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr. was NASCAR’s top series’ highest earning driver in 2017. According to an article by Forbes, NASCAR 15-time Most Popular Driver earned $22 million in his last year as a driver in the series. Last year marked the eighth time in the last nine years Earnhardt was the Cup Series’ highest paid driver.

Seven-time Cup Series champion and Earnhardt’s Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson was second to Earnhardt in the earnings category in 2017 at $19.2 million. Johnson was the highest paid series driver in 2016, the only year in the past nine in which Earnhardt wasn’t at the top in earnings. Earnhardt missed half the 2016 season, sidelined by a concussion.

According to Forbes, Earnhardt’s estimated career-earnings through 2017 was $410 million. Only Jeff Gordon earned more.

Other top-five earners in 2017 were Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin at $14.7 million and $14.6 million, respectively, and Kevin Harvick at $13.6 million.

Martin Truex Jr. was the 2017 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion.
