Newly-crowned 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion — a seven-time champion — Jimmie Johnson may have been the biggest honoree and star of the evening during the 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Awards banquet at Wynn Las Vegas, but during the ceremony, Dale Earnhardt Jr. received the Sprint Most Popular Driver Award, given by the National Motorsports Press Association (NMPA), for the 14th time.
“Thank you fans! You guys are such a huge part of our team and help motivate us in so many ways,” Earnhardt (@DaleJr
) tweeted after receiving his latest trophy.
Earnhardt won the fan-voted award, yet again, despite missing half the season. After running 18 of the 36 points-paying races that made up the season, Earnhardt was sidelined by a concussion that, according to his doctors, was sustained in a crash at Michigan International Speedway.
Earnhardt’s 14 Most Popular Driver Awards have come consecutively, as he’s won the award yearly since 2003. Prior to Earnhardt’s mainstay as Most Popular Driver, Bill Elliott was the perennial winner of the award, claiming it a record 16 times.
