Darlington (S.C.) Raceway honored NASCAR Hall of Famer and Timmonsville, S.C., native Cale Yarborough on Saturday by naming its NASCAR Sprint Cup Series garage area after him, renaming it the Cale Yarborough Garage.

“This is a great honor; there’s no place like Darlington to me,” Yarborough said. “I slipped under the fence when I came to see my first race and now, I’ve got a garage named after me.”

Yarborough was a five-time winner at Darlington, claiming Southern 500 victories at the track in 1968, 1973 and 1974, 1978 and 1982. He is a three-time Sprint (then-Winston) Cup champion, claiming consecutive titles between 1976 and 1978. The 83-race-winner was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2012.

“Winning that 1968 Southern 500 on the original Darlington race track — I wouldn’t take anything for that,” Yarborough said.
