Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart, two Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series legends with Indiana ties and a combined seven wins in the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, will be the first two NASCAR drivers inducted into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame on May 24 under restructured criteria for IMS HOF induction. Previously, only Indianapolis 500 participants were considered for induction.

“We are thrilled that the first class of inductees with our new name and election criteria honor two drivers who mean so much to fans in Central Indiana and around the world,” Indianapolis Motor Speedway Foundation President Tony George said, as quoted in a press release.

Gordon, who grew up in Pittsboro, Ind., after moving from California is a five-time Brickyard 400 winner, including the inaugural event in 1994. He also won in 1998, 2001, 2004 and 2014, making him the winningest driver of the race that has been run 24 times. Stewart, a Columbus, Ind., native, won in 2005 and 2007. Both drivers made their last Brickyard 400 starts in 2016, the last year of full-time competition for Stewart as a driver, and Gordon a year after official retirement in a fill-in role for the injured Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Stewart also competed in the Indianapolis 500 five times with best finish of fifth in 1997. He was the Indy 500 pole sitter in 1996, his first year running the race.
