NASCAR Cup: Jimmie Johnson to back at Bristol

Jimmie Johnson qualified 17th on Friday for Sunday’s Food City 500 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Bristol (Ten.) Motor Speedway, but he’ll have to drop to the back for Sunday’s green flag, because his No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet team changed tires after Friday’s qualifying session. NASCAR rules dictate that cars start races on the same sets of tires on which they qualify.

The tire change was made, because of a deflating tire.

Johnson will be one of at least three drivers to drop to the back for the start of Sunday’s race, joining Kevin Harvick and A.J. Allmendinger. Harvick and Allmendinger were forced to backup cars as a result of separate crashes in Friday’s practice session. Allmendinger qualified near Johnson in 18th. Harvick, though, failed to make a qualifying attempt Friday, as his car was still preparing his backup car.
