Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driver Martin Truex Jr. and longtime girlfriend Sherry Pollex have been named the third quarter recipients of the Pocono Spirit Award, presented by the National Motorsports Press Association.

The award recognizes “character and achievement in the face of adversity, sportsmanship and contributions to motorsports,” according to the announcement from the NMPA.

Truex and Pollex, through the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation, have raised funds and awareness for ovarian and childhood cancers, inspired, at least in part, by Pollex’s battle with ovarian cancer. Recently, they launched the second installment of the second-annual “Drive For Teal & Gold” campaign in which participating drivers have used teal and gold steering wheels and driving gloves to raise awareness of the cause and, then, raise funds through the auction sale of those steering wheels and driving gloves.

They received 45 percent of the votes cast by the membership of the NMPA. Others receiving votes for the third-quarter were award were the NASCAR Foundation, Joey Logano and Hendrick Motorsports drivers (Dale Earnhardt Jr., Chase Elliott, Jimmie Johnson and Kasey Kahne).

The NMPA selects a winner of the award each quarter, and then, an overall winner for the year. NASCAR artist Sam Bass and the Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America were the first and second quarter winners this year.
