Matt Kenseth is, reportedly, returning to Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series racing with a familiar race team. According to an SB Nation report Monday, Kenseth will share driving duties with Trevor Bayne on the No. 6 Roush Fenway Racing team. RFR hasn’t announced Kenseth’s hiring, but a “major announcement” from the team is scheduled for Wednesday. Kenseth’s first race behind the wheel of the No. 6 is expected to be the Kansas Speedway race May 12.

Kenseth drove the No. 17 for RFR full-time from 2000 through 2012. During that time, he claimed 24 of his 30-career wins, was the 2000 Winston (Now Monster Energy NASCAR) Cup Series Rookie of the Year and the 2003 series champion. He left Roush Fenway for Joe Gibbs Racing ahead of the 2013 season to drive the No. 20 Toyota there.

Kenseth was released by JGR ahead of the 2018 season to make room for the incoming Erik Jones. Kenseth won his second-to-last Cup Series race at Phoenix International Raceway, now known as ISM Raceway, last November.

“I think on the overall picture though for us, we just got put in this situation with a lot of things happening to our race team over a period of about a year and half where we wound up at this spot,” JGR owner Joe Gibbs said of Kenseth’s release. “We didn’t want to be here, but we wound up here and then we had to make a decision.”

Bayne has been a full-time Cup Series driver for Roush Fenway since 2015 after a stint as a part-time driver for Wood Brothers Racing. In his 117-career starts as driver of the No. 6, Bayne has four top-fives and 13 top-10 finishes. His lone Cup Series win came in the 2011 Daytona 500 with Wood Brothers Racing.
