NASCAR Cup: Sam Hornish Jr. preps Michael McDowell’s car at Michigan
By AMANDA VINCENT
Sam Hornish Jr. will be behind the wheel of the No. 95 Circle Sport-Leavine Family Racing Chevrolet entry Friday and Sunday for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series qualifying and practice sessions at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn in preparation for Sunday’s Pure Michigan 400. The team’s regular driver, Michael McDowell, though, will be in the car for the race.
Hornish will be a fill-in for the No. 95 team while McDowell fulfills duties as a driver for Richard Childress Racing in Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis. The Xfinity Series has practice sessions scheduled at Road America on Friday and is scheduled to qualify and race at the track, putting McDowell there both Friday and Saturday.
Circle Sport-Leavine Family Racing has an alliance with Richard Childress Racing, which also competes with three of its own entries in the Sprint Cup competition.
Hornish has competed in three NASCAR national-level races, so far, this season, all in the Xfinity Series. He won the first of two races at Iowa Speedway in Newton, driving for Joe Gibbs Racing. The other two races came with RCR, resulting in a sixth-place finish in a return trip to Iowa and a second-place finish more recently at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington.
