Veteran Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series crew chief Richard “Slugger” Labbe has been hired by Toyota Racing Development as the Manager of Teams and Vehicles Support. Labbe announced his new job on “The Morning Drive” on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio on Wednesday morning.

“It’s going to be a challenge for me, working for an OEM after being in NASCAR for 32 years,” Labbe said. “But working with the various racing divisions of Toyota Motorsports through TRD is a very exciting challenge for me, and I’m looking forward to it.”

In his new position, Labbe will provide technical support to Toyota teams across several racing series, including NASCAR.

“I get to do something completely different than NASCAR to start this weekend, and I’m looking forward to that challenge,” Labbe said. “It’s going to be a pretty cool opportunity.”

Labbe’s new opportunity begins with the NHRA event at zMax Dragway near Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway.

Labbe was most recently crew chief on the No. 3 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet team of Austin Dillon in the Cup Series. He left that post in May. He had been with at RCR since 2010, with one win to his credit in that time, coming in the 2011 Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway with driver Paul Menard. During his time at Childress, Labbe also had a stint as head of RCR’s research and development program.

In all, Labbe is a five-time winner as a crew chief in NASCAR’s top series, also winning three races with Michael Waltrip at Dale Earnhardt Inc. and once with Jeremy Mayfield at Evernham Motorsports. Other teams for which Labbe worked as a crew chief include Robert Yates Racing, MB2 Motorsports, Bill Davis Racing, TRG Motorsports and Richard Petty Motorsports.
