For the most part, the NASCAR community honored Tony Stewart’s wishes for a low-key send-off in his final year of full-time Sprint Cup Series competition as a driver, but Stewart was heavily honored during Champion’s Week in Las Vegas.
Stewart was the subject of a roast during Champion’s Week and during the yearly After the Lap event, he was honored with a visit from his racing hero, A.J. Foyt. He also received special recognition from Chevrolet during the Myers Brothers Awards Luncheon on Thursday. That honor included a Chevrolet Suburban to be donated to Stewart’s charity of choice.
The honors continued Friday evening during the Sprint Cup Series Awards banquet at Wynn Las Vegas. That honor also took on a charitable done, as the motorsports industry made a donation of $1.8 million to the EB (Epidermolysis Bullosa) Research Partnership.
“Tony wanted to have a very low-key send-off during his final NASCAR season, and he was pretty emphatic about it,” NASCAR Vice Chairman Mike Helton said. “He certainly earned a lot of recognition for all that he accomplished, and as an industry, we felt it was important to honor him. People know how passionate he is about motorsports, but he’s equally passionate about helping others. On behalf of the entire motorsports industry, we felt this collective donation in Tony’s name was a fitting tribute to all that he’s accomplished during his NASCAR career.”
EB is a skin disorders. Individuals affected by the disease suffer with skin that can tear apart and blister, causing severe pain, disfigurement and wounds that never heal because of a lack of critical proteins that bind layers of the skin.
