NASCAR Cup: Ty Dillon subs for Regan Smith at Chicagoland
By AMANDA VINCENT
Regan Smith, driver of the No. 7 Tommy Baldwin Racing Chevrolet in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, was still in North Carolina with wife Megan on Sunday as the couple awaits the birth of their second child. As a result, NASCAR Xfinity Series regular Ty Dillon will drive the No. 7 in Sunday’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 400 at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Ill., as a substitute for Smith.
Tommy Baldwin Racing announced the driver change Sunday morning via Twitter (@TBR_Racing). Dillon has been in the car all weekend for Sprint Cup Series practice. Qualifying, scheduled for Friday evening, was cancelled because of rain.
Although an Xfinity Series regular, Dillon has competed in eight Sprint Cup races this season, primarily in the No. 95 Circle Sport-Leavine Family Racing Chevrolet. He also filled-in for the then-injured Tony Stewart in the No. 14 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet early in the season. He has 15-career starts at the Sprint Cup level.
The No. 7 team, with Smith behind the wheel, has two top-10 finishes through the first 26 races of the 36-race regular season.
