NASCAR modified racing legend Ted Christopher was killed in a plane crash at 1:53 p.m. ET Saturday near Guilford, Con. He was 59. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.

“We are all saddened to learn of the tragic plane crash this afternoon that claimed the lives of NASCAR driver Ted Christopher and the aircraft’s pilot,” read a statement from NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France that was released by NASCAR on Saturday. “As a championship driver on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and New England short tracks, Christopher was a throwback to NASCAR’s roots. He was a tough racer’s racer, and his hard-driving style and candid personality endeared him to short track fans throughout the country. He will be missed throughout the racing community, in the garage and, especially, in the hearts of his many fans. NASCAR has his family and friends in its thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Christopher was the 2008 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion. He also was named the series’ most popular driver three times. In 2006, he was named one of the top-25 all-time best drivers in the Whelen All-American Series.

Christopher won 13 track championships, including nine at Stafford (Con.) Motor Speedway.

He also made 29 NASCAR national-level starts — six in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, 21 in the Xfinity Series and two in the Camping World Truck Series. His last NASCAR national starts was a Cup Series race in 2009.

Several drivers in NASCAR’s top series expressed condolences via social media upon learning of Christopher’s death.

“Heard the news of this just moments after walking into VL (after JR Motorsports driver Justin Allgaier won the Xfinity Series race at Chicagoland Speedway on Saturday). Very sad. He was a legend,” Dale Earnhardt Jr. (@DaleJr) tweeted.

“Wow can’t believe the news of Ted Christopher. Thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family. RIP!” tweeted Kyle Larson (@KyleLarsonRacin).
