Some NASCAR penalties should be series-specific

*EDITOR’S NOTE: NASCAR has since issued series-specific penalties for those involved in the pit stop that was followed by a wheel coming off Kyle Busch’s truck in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.


NASCAR penalties for the Feb. 23-25 race weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway are expected to be announced by the sanctioning body today (Wednesday). Suspensions for a few key members of Kyle Busch Motorsports’ No. 4 team in the Camping World Truck Series are expected — namely for crew chief Marcus Richmond, rear tire changer Coleman Dollarhide and jack man Ernie Pierce. Here’s the rub — Dollarhide and Pierce’s primary gigs are with Stewart-Haas Racing in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series.

Previously, NASCAR suspensions applied to points-paying races across all national series. That would mean Dollarhide and Pierce wouldn’t be available to SHR for the duration of the suspensions. But according to a NASCAR executive on Monday, Dollarhide and Pierce’s statuses with SHR would be affected if they are suspended as a result of the suspensions that are expected because of a wheel coming of of the No. 4 truck late in the Active Pest Control 200 Truck Series race at Atlanta, according to an NBC Sports report. Instead, the suspensions will just apply to Truck Series races.
If that’s the case, I say, “Good call, NASCAR.” 
I get the argument against limiting such penalties to a single series, one of those arguments being that these guys’ deals with KBM may have been a one-off deal, and since they won’t be pitting the truck anymore, the penalty is a non-penalty, of sorts. But the way I see it, why penalize Stewart-Haas Racing Racing for a pit-road mistake made during a KBM pit-road mistake during a Truck Series race.
That being said, I don’t think this stance should apply to all rules violations. Here’s the way I see it; punishments for behavioral issues — substance abuse violations, post-race physical altercations, overly aggressive on-track retaliation, etc. — should span all three series, but pit road miscues like the one in Saturday’s truck race should be series-specific.
