NASCAR schedule, weather outlook for Las Vegas Motor Speedway

With races at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway and Atlanta Motor Speedway complete, NASCAR heads west for its annual early-season West Coast Swing. First stop — Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Also, for the third weekend in a row, NASCAR is providing a national-series tripleheader weekend, as the Camping World Truck Series joins the Xfinity and Monster Energy NASCAR Cup series on the first leg of the West Coast swing.
This weekend will be the first of two tripleheader NASCAR weekends at LVMS, as a second Vegas race has been added to all three series’ schedules. This weekend will culminate in the running of the Pennzoil 400 for the Cup Series on Sunday. The Xfinity Series will run the Boyd Gaming 300 on Saturday, with the Truck Series opening the weekend Friday night with the running of the Stratosphere 300.
Friday night’s Truck Series race is scheduled for a 134-lap distance, split into two 30-laps and a 74-lap stage. On Saturday, the Xfinity Series race will be comprised of 45, 45 and 110-lap stages. Sunday’s 267-lap Cup race will be made-up of two 80-lap stages and a 107-lap stage.
Eventual 2017 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion Martin Truex Jr. won his first of a series-leading eight races last season in the March visit to LVMS last year, while Joey Logano won last year’s Xfinity Series race in Las Vegas. Ben Rhodes claimed his first-career Camping World Truck Series win in that series’ visit to Vegas, laster in the year.

WEATHER (courtesy of
Las Vegas Motor Spoeedway is expected to provide a cool weekend for racing, with high temperatures in the mid-50s Saturday and Sunday, race days for the Cup and Xfinity Series. For night racing for the Truck Series on Friday, temperatures are expected to be on their way to an overnight low in the mid-40s.
Skies are expected to be free of participation for the Cup race on Sunday. There’s a 50/50 chance of rain during the day Friday, possibly affecting the practice schedules. That rain, though, is expected to move out of the area in time for the evening’s Truck Series race. Saturday’s Xfinity Series race looks to be the weekend race most at risk of being interrupted by rain with a 25 percent of precipitation expected for Las Vegas that day.
