NASCAR suspends team member for substance abuse

By AMANDA VINCENT

NASCAR announced on Tuesday the indefinite suspension of Ernest Pierce, a development pit crew member for Joe Gibbs Racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. According to a press release from NASCAR, Pierce violated the sanctioning body’s substance abuse policy. The violation was discovered on June 17.

In its penalty announcement, NASCAR cited violations of sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing) and 19 (violation of the NASCAR substance abuse policy) of its 2015 rule book.

Per NASCAR rules, Pierce may be reinstated upon completion of NASCAR’s prescribed Road to Recovery rehabilitation program.
