NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver John Wes Townley has been sidelined by an injury to his left ankle. As a result, Cody Coughlin will drive the No. 05 Athenian Motorsports Chevrolet, normally driven by Townley, in Friday night’s Truck Series race at Texas Motor Speedway near Fort Worth. Townley’s injury is not racing related, according to a release from Townley’s public relations representative.
“I want to wish John Wes a speedy recovery and hope he’s back at the track soon,” Coughlin said. “I’m honored that Athenian Motorsports thought of me to drive their truck this weekend.”
Coughlin has 11-career starts in the Truck Series, with nine of those starts coming in 2016. Eight of his nine 2016 starts, to this point, came from behind the wheel of Kyle Busch Motorsports entries. His best finish, so far, this year was a 12th-place finish at Texas when the series last visited the track in June.
“I like Texas a lot,” Coughlin said. “I had a lot of speed when I ran the truck race there this summer. I feel like I can really get around that place and Athenian’s trucks are fast. I think that’s going to make for a good weekend for us.”
Townley’s ankle injury is the second injury that has sidelined him this season. He missed two races earlier this year as the result of a concussion.
