Erik Jones claimed his fourth win of the 2016 NASCAR Xfinity Series season on Saturday with a victory in the Drive For Safety 300 at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Ill. With the Chicagoland race being the final race of the regular season, Jones will head into the series’ first-ever chase with the championship points lead. With three bonus points per regular-season win added to the base of 2000 with which drivers will start their potential championship runs, Jones will head into the chase opener next weekend at Kentucky Speedway in Sparta with a points tally of 2012 points.
“It’s a lot of momentum (heading into the chase),” Jones said of his Chicagoland win. “I wish this was for our first round right here. We’ll go into Kentucky, definitely with a full head of steam and are due for another win there. Our mile-and-a-half program is great; it’s been great all year. To finally get a first mile-and-a-half win of the year, just looking forward to getting to Kentucky next weekend and try to chase down another one.”
Elliott Sadler and Daniel Suarez were the only other two champioinship-eligible race winners throughout the 26-race regular season, Sadler with two wins and Suarez with one. As a result they’ll head to Kentucky second and third in the standings, Sadler with 2006 points and Suarez with 2003.
