JR Motorsports Race Operations Manager Mike Bumgarner will be the crew chief on JRM’s No. 1 Chevrolet team of Elliott Sadler for Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series season-finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Kevin Meendering, the regular crew chief for the team, has been suspended for the race.
“We let Kevin, ultimately, make this decision because it’s his team,” JR Motorsports co-owner and General Manager Kelley Earnhardt Miller said. “Kevin chose Mike to sit in the crew chief’s seat and for good reason; he is experienced atop the pit box and very dependable. We have a great deal of confidence in Mike to give Elliott his best opportunity to win on Saturday.”
Bumgarner has been with JRM since 2013. He joined the organization that year to be a crew chief for the No. 5 Xfinity Series team. He became Race Operations Manager the following year. Prior to joining JR Motorsports, Bumgarner was with Hendrick Motorsports for 18 years, part of that time as a crew chief.
Meendering’s suspension came as a result of a lug-nut rule violation for the second-consecutive race Saturday in the Ticket Galaxy 200 at Phoenix International Raceway in Avondale, Ariz. The No. 1 car had only 18 of 20 lug nuts properly installed and insured during post-race lug-nut inspection. The previous weekend at Texas Motor Speedway, 19 lug nuts were properly installed and secured at the end of the race.
Sadler is one of four drivers racing for the 2016 Xfinity Series championship at Homestead-Miami. Other drivers vying for the title include Sadler’s JR Motorsports teammate Justin Allgaier and Joe Gibbs Racing drivers Erik Jones and Daniel Suarez.
