NASCAR Xfinity: Regan Smith reunites with JR Motorsports at Bristol

By AMANDA VINCENT
Regan Smith will reunite with his former NASCAR Xfinity Series team, JR Motorsports, for the Xfinity race at Bristol (Ten.) Motor Speedway on Aug. 19. He’ll drive the No. 88 Chevrolet entry that has been driven by several drivers, so far, this year, including JRM co-owner Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kevin Harvick and Kasey Kahne, among others. The Bristol race will be Smith’s first Xfinity Series start of the year. He’ll be a teammate to JRM’s full-time Xfinity Series drivers, Elliott Sadler and Justin Allgaier.
Smith drove a No. 7 entry for JR Motorsports at the Xfinity level for three years between 2013 and 2015, but was released by the team at the end of the of the 2015 season because of a lack of sponsorship. He eventually struck a deal with Tommy Baldwin Racing to return to the Sprint Cup Series for 2016 as driver of the No. 7 Tommy Baldwin Racing Chevrolet. He arrived at JRM for full-time 2013 Xfinity (then-Nationwide) Series competition from the Sprint Cup Series after losing his ride with Furniture Row Racing when that team opted to go with past Cup champion Kurt Busch instead of Smith. He also drove a No. 5 entry for JRM in the 2012 season-finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
All six of Smith’s career-wins in the Xfinity Series came with JR Motorsports, including a trip to victory lane in his first race with the team in the 2012 Homestead race. He finished in the top-five of the season-ending points standings in his three full seasons at JR Motorsports, including a runner-up finish in 2014.
