Nico Rosberg turns an aggressive start to the race and a good pit strategy into his first win of the Grand Prix of Spain at Catalunya, edging teammate Lewis Hamilton who finished second. Hamilton remains leader of the World Champion points race, as well as Mercedes adding to the constructors race points with the Rosberg-Hamilton one-two-punch that is a continued trend in the Formula 1 series.
Hamilton finished 17 seconds behind Rosberg with a late charge with 10 laps left that ended coming up short of defending as champion. Never being able to recover losing a position to Sebastian Vettel on turn one from pole and a slight hold-up along pit road left Hamilton forced to audible race strategy for his only chance of earning a win.
Vettel finished third to round out the podium and still holds on to the third place in points. Early in the race, Vettel proved to be a problem for Hamilton, holding him off from the second position, but ultimately getting shuffled back a spot during the race. Having a win in the second race of the year had Vettel and Ferrari with high hopes for the remainder of the season, but the continued success of Mercedes is opening a solid gap between first and second in constructor points.
The season is quickly rounding out to the form of last season with not much competition for the Mercedes team of Hamilton and Rosberg. Next race is the Grand Prix of Monaco at Monte Carlo on May 24th — the sixth event of the year.
