No. 97 Xfinity Series team penalized

Crew chief John Monsam and car chief David Jones, both of the Obaika Racing No. 97 team in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, were suspended from the next race on the schedule, according to an announcement from NASCAR on Wednesday. In addition, Monsam was fined $15,000. Driver Peyton Sellers and car owner Victor Obaika were each docked 15 championship points.

An improperly attached weight fell off of Seller’s No. 97 car during a practice session at Dover (Del.) International Speedway on May 29. Fellow-competitor Carl Long struck the piece of tungsten, resulting in Long’s No. 13 car hitting the outside wall.

“When I went under the bridge down into (turn three), I saw some white dust come out from under the 97 car, concrete dust,” Long said, according to a report on PopularSpeed.com. “And I saw that and the first thing I thought was wow, his sway bar must be dragging the track big time. By the time that thought went through my head, I had very solid hit in the front end and lost all control.”
