ESPN recently put together a list of the world’s top-100 athletes. That list included eight race car drivers, five of those being from the NASCAR community. According to the online report by ESPN, the formula used to compile the list was devised based on athlete salaries, endorsement deals and social media following.
Dale Earnhardt Jr., NASCAR’s most popular driver several times over, was tops among the race car drivers on the list, coming in at 57th. He was immediately followed by one of his Hendrick Motorsports teammates, six-time Sprint Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson.
A couple of Stewart-Haas Racing drivers also made the list. Danica Patrick ranked 63rd, while her boss and teammate, SHR driver/co-owner and three-time Cup champion Tony Stewart was 77th on the list. Reigning Sprint Cup champion Kyle Busch came in 94th.
Other race car drivers on the list were Formula 1 drivers Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen. They were listed 59th, 75th and 97th, respectively.
Check out the full list, including basketball players, baseball players, golfers, tennis players, football players and soccer players, among athletes from other sports, here.
