Regan Smith claimed his first win of the 2015 NASCAR Xfinity Series season and snapped a 52-race winless streak going back to the Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway race that opened the 2014 season when he made a last lap pass on road course specialist Alex Tagliani on Saturday in the Nationwide Children’s Hospital 200 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
“I saw a weak spot the corner before, the lap before,” Smith said. “I got to his bumper and said, ‘Main, I’m not giving up this opportunity,’ so I stuffed it in there.”
The pass was a controversial one because of its physicality. Smith looked at it as an opportunity he couldn’t pass up, while Tagliani saw it as a desperate move by a driver who couldn’t get by him cleanly.
