Simon Pagenaud claims fifth pole of season

CHEVROLET PRESS RELEASE

NEWTON, Iowa (July 9, 2016) – Simon Pagenaud and his No. 22 Team Penske Chevrolet team took another step in their determined march toward the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series (VICS) title by winning the Verizon P1 Award for Sunday’s Iowa Corn 300.

Pagenaud, again carrying the bright colors of Menards, bested the field with a total time of 34.6334 seconds/185.855 mph average speed around the .894-mile, variably banked Iowa Speedway oval.

“It is such a gamble for the engineers in this situation,” said Pagenaud. “You only get two laps. Conditions from this morning to the afternoon changed.  It is fun when you get the car right like this on an oval. This Menards car is beautiful. It has been super close all weekend. I’m super-proud of the No. 22 team. Chevy has been incredible giving us so much power and such a good aero kit. It’s been comfortable and a lot more to my driving style.”

Starting alongside Pagenaud on the front row will be Josef Newgarden in the No. 21 Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet.  Newgarden has finished second in the last two VICS races at Iowa Speedway.

Row two for the 300-lap/268.2-mile race will be Helio Castroneves, No. 3 Hitachi Team Penske Chevrolet; and rookie-of-the-year contender Max Chilton, No. 8 Gallagher Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet.

Chevrolet drivers captured the top-eight positions in the starting field, and 10 of the top-11 in the 22-car field.
