Simon Pagenaud Puts Chevy on Pole at Barber

BIRMINGHAM (April 23, 2016) – Simon Pagenaud, the most recent Verizon IndyCar Series race winner-last Sunday on the Streets of Long Beach-won the Verizon P1 Award for the Indy Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park. With a lap of 1 minute, 6.7262 seconds/124.089 mph, Pagenaud, piloting the No. 22 PPG Automotive Finishes Team Penske Chevrolet, captured his first pole of the 2016 season, and the third of his career.
Will Power qualified the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet second. Power, along with Pagenaud and Scott Dixon, No. 9 Target Coca Cola Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet, who qualified fourth for Sunday’s 90-lap race, are the only drivers to appear in every Firestone Fast Six session in 2016.
Last year’s Barber Motorsports Park break-through winner, Josef Newgarden, qualified the No. 21 Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet third. Sebastien Bourdais, No. 11 Hydroxycut Europa KVSH Racing Chevrolet qualified fifth to give Team Chevy drivers the top-five starting positions for the 207-mile race around the 2.3-mile, 17-turn road course.
Graham Rahal (Honda) completed the Firestone Fast Six field at Barber.
Helio Castroneves, No. 3 AAA Insurance Team Penske Chevrolet, qualified seventh. Chip Ganassi Racing’s Tony Kanaan put the No. 10 NTT Data Chevrolet in the ninth starting spot with teammate Charlie Kimball 10th in the No. 83 Tresiba Chevrolet.
Max Chilton will start the No. 8 Gallagher Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet in 11th place, and Juan Pablo Montoya will roll the No. 2 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet to the green in 21st place.
The Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama is set to start at 2 p.m. CDT Sunday with live television coverage on NBCSN. Live radio coverage will be on XM Radio Channel 209, the INDYCAR Radio Network, and Sirius Satellite Radio Channel 212.
