CHEVROLET PRESS RELEASE
LONG BEACH, Calif (April 17, 2016) – Simon Pagenaud put the No. 22 PPG Automotive Finishes Team Penske Chevrolet in the lead for the final time on lap 56 of the 80-lap Grand Prix of Long Beach, and went on to claim his fifth career Verizon IndyCar Series (VICS) victory. It was his first win on the Streets of Long Beach.
Starting third on the grid, Pagenaud was credited with leading twice for a total of 28 laps on his way to his first victory as a Team Chevy driver.
“It’s pretty cool because this is my favorite street course like I said before the event,” said Pagenaud. “The competition level of IndyCar is so high that it’s amazing. The PPG car is good luck on me because every time I have been in the car I have been on the podium. Glad to represent those guys, and glad to represent Chevrolet as well. It’s the first win for Roger (Penske) so that is a check.”
Defending Series’ champion Scott Dixon brought the No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet to the checkered flag second only 0.3032 behind the winner. The one-two finish kept the pair of Chevrolet IndyCar drivers one-two in the standings.
Pole winner Helio Castroneves completed the podium of all Chevrolet drivers bringing the No. 3 Auto Club of Southern California Team Penske Chevrolet home in third place after leading a total of 47 laps in the caution-free race.
Juan Pablo Montoya, No. 2 Verizon Chevrolet was fourth in the final finishing order to complete the Bowtie 1-2-3-4 finish. In total, eight drivers of the Chevrolet Aero Kit IndyCar with fully integrated V6 engine brought home top-10 finishes.
Tony Kanaan, No. 10 NTT Data Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet finished sixth followed by Will Power, No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet in seventh place.
Sebastien Bourdais, No. 11 California Baptist University KVSH Racing Chevrolet finished ninth and Josef Newgarden, No. 21 Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet was 10th to give Chevrolet Racing eight of the top-10 finishers in the 157.44-mile race on the 1.968, 11-turn street course in downtown Long Beach.
Following Pagenaud and Dixon in the standings are Montoya in third, Castroneves in fourth and Kanaan in fifth.
Round Four of the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series season is scheduled for April 24 at Barber Motorsports Park, Birmingham, Alabama.
