Tommy Baldwin returns to crew chief position

By AMANDA VINCENT

With the departure of Kevin “Bono” Manion from Tommy Baldwin Racing to assume crew chief duties for driver Sam Hornish Jr. and the No. 9 Ford team at Richard Petty Motorsports in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, TBR owner Tommy Baldwin Jr. is assuming crew chief duties for driver Alex Bowman and his No. 7 Chevrolet Sprint Cup team, according to a press release from Tommy Baldwin Racing on Tuesday.

“I’m very happy for Bono,” Baldwin said in a written statement. “We’ve been friends a long time, and I wish him nothing but the best. Climbing atop the pit box is somewhat of a familiar role for me, and I look forward to working with Alex.”

Baldwin’s first race in his return to crew chief duties will be Saturday night’s SpongeBob SquarePants 400 at Kansas Speedway near Kansas City, Kan.

Baldwin was a longtime crew chief at NASCAR’s top level before forming his own race team in 2009. He previously worked as crew chief for Bill Davis Racing, Ultra Motorsports, Evernham Motorsports and Robert Yates Racing. Drivers he worked with included Ward Burton, Jimmy Spencer, Kasey Kahne and Elliott Sadler. With Burton, Baldwin won the 2002 Daytona 500.
